Is Quidditch Now a Real, Recognized Sport
As played by Harry Potter and his companions, Quidditch is now recognized by the International Quidditch Association (IQA) as a real sport. In 2007 the United States Quidditch Association, back then named the Intercollegiate Quidditch Association or (I.Q.A), was founded to regulate quidditch in the United States and abroad, it turned out to be a very popular sport amongst college students.
What is Quidditch?
Quidditch is a sport that is played between two teams of seven players. Each team has a seeker, keeper, beater, chaser, and bludger.
- The seeker is the player on the receiving team who tries to catch the ball. The seeker tries to throw, catch, or dodge the ball.
- The keeper is the player who catches the ball when it is released from the thrower.
- The beater is the player who attempts to beat or dodge the bludgers of the opposing team.
- The chaser is the player on the throwing team who tries to catch the ball. The chaser tries to catch the ball when it’s released.
- The bludgers are the players on the team who try to hit, impede, or block the other team’s chaser.
Quidditch is now a real sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1998, and the sport is played in 74 countries by an estimated 1.6 million people. Quidditch is a hybrid of cricket and dodgeball played on a broomstick by seven-person teams. It originated in the wizarding world of Harry Potter, but in 2010, it was officially recognized as what we know it today.
Quidditch: How to recognize it?
Quidditch can be identified by five main areas, all of which combine to make the game unique. The first area that may seem obvious is because of the sport’s name itself. The name is inscribed on the bottom of the golden Quidditch pitch, covered in a purple field with golden hoops. The word “Quidditch” is not derived from any particular etymological root, but was the result of filling five pages of a notebook with different words beginning with “Q”
Quidditch is being played all over the world, with thousands taking to the pitch every week. So, what is it all about? The rules of Quidditch are quite simple – you score points by throwing quaffles (a ball and a sock) down on the pitch using brooms. Two players score using a bludger (a stuffed pig), one using a beautiful chaser (a set of handlebars), and one using the snitch (a golden ball). The chasers are harder than they look, and the snitch is shy and hard to spot. The game is won if a seeker manages to catch the snitch first.
Quidditch is one of the most extraordinary sports out there. It’s the ultimate combination of athleticism, skill, strategy, teamwork, and wit. Once you’ve seen it, you’ll never look at a broom the same way again.
How did the Sport Quidditch Starts?
The sport originated with the Harry Potter book and film series (and later the Fantastic Beasts movies) and is usually played on a pitch with a ring surrounding three 15-20m-high goalposts. The sport is played on broomsticks, and each player has six balls with one, three, or seven feathers attached to them. Each feather can be individually captured, tripped, or thrown, but each broomstick can only carry three balls at any given time.
Quidditch is a more physical version of basketball. It’s a combination of running, catching, throwing, and dodging (like dodgeball). It is a sport that combines the scoring of basketball, the tackling of football, and running off track. It is played by two teams of 7, who attempt to score points by flying on broomsticks and passing a ball through hoops and bats. The sport originated at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in England when the first championship was played in the 1691-1692 school year when Gryffindor received the biggest defeat that it would suffer for another 300 years. Founder Salazar Slytherin played a friendly game with students of Hogwarts, and the game caught on from there.
Can Quidditch play in real life?
Yes, Quidditch is a full-contact sport. It’s played on 70 quidditch pitches worldwide, and in the United States, there are 3,000 players on 150 teams.
In theory, at least, most sports, even baseball, are played by scoring points through different means. Quidditch has been adapted into a sport in many schools, with teams of seven or eleven players competing. There are special rules associated with each form of play, but the basic concept is much like other sports. The players pass a ball from one player to the next, run for positions, score goals, and score points.
In a real word situation, Quidditch of course cannot be played on flying broomsticks, with a snitch flying using its own wings at extremely high speeds. But it is also a sport that requires players to use their imagination. It’s fun, it’s competitive, and it keeps you fit. People can do anything if they are allowed to free their imagination, after all, that’s exactly how the sport started in the first place.
